This Women’s History Month we celebrate the legacy of Eunice Johnson, a visionary who changed the way the world saw Black beauty and fashion.

As the co-founder of Johnson Publishing Company alongside her husband John H. Johnson, Eunice Johnson helped shape the cultural influence of Ebony and Jet magazines. Yet one of her most powerful contributions came through the Ebony Fashion Fair, a traveling runway show that celebrated Black models, Black style, and Black elegance at a time when the fashion industry offered very little representation.

For decades, the Ebony Fashion Fair toured cities across the country, raising millions of dollars for charities while redefining beauty standards and creating space for Black models and designers.

Eunice Johnson showed the world that representation is powerful, and that fashion can be both culture and community.

During Women’s History Month, it is important to recognize women whose work shaped industries, created opportunity, and opened doors for generations that followed. One of those women is Marjorie Stewart Joyner.
Marjorie Joyner was more than a hairstylist. She was an innovator, an educator, and a business leader who transformed the beauty industry.

In 1928 she patented the permanent wave machine, becoming the first African American woman to receive a patent for a haircare invention. Her innovation revolutionized textured hair styling and helped expand professional beauty services across the country.

Joyner worked closely with beauty pioneer Madam C. J. Walker, helping to grow the Walker beauty empire and training thousands of stylists through the Walker school system. Her influence extended far beyond the salon chair. She built systems of education and professional development that empowered Black women to build careers, businesses, and financial independence within the beauty industry.

Legacy lives in the hands that teach, create, and open doors.
Olive Benson was a pioneering Boston hairstylist whose work crossed every texture, every space, and every generation. A Cambridge native, salon owner in Boston and Cambridge, educator, innovator, and industry leader, she helped redefine what professional excellence looked like in cosmetology.
Her influence reached far beyond the chair. As an educator with Softsheen, she shaped professional standards while serving distinguished clients including Diana Ross and members of the King family. In 1996, she introduced the Universal Texture Line, a relaxing system designed for all hair textures, a forward-thinking innovation that reflected her inclusive vision for the industry.
That same year, Olive made history as the first African American to receive the National Hairstylist Award and was later inducted into the National Cosmetology Association of Renown. Her impact extended into education as a contributor to the Milady textbook, helping shape how future stylists learn the craft.
This story is also personal. Olive was a lifelong friend of my grandmother. They attended Cambridge Rindge & Latin, the same school I graduated from. Legacy is not distant, it is connected, generational, and living.
We honor Olive Benson for her innovation, her leadership, and the standards she left for us to carry forward.

Danny Toon, master stylist and visionary founder of Danny’s His and Hers, shaped more than hairstyles, he shaped culture. For over four decades on Massachusetts Avenue, his salon stood as a cornerstone in Black Boston’s Beauty industry, a space where excellence, community, and creativity met.
Known for precision, presence, and an unmistakable energy, Danny created an environment that welcomed everyone, from everyday clients to public figures, while quietly developing the next generation of industry leaders. Many respected professionals credit his mentorship as a defining force in their careers.
His impact lives beyond the chair. It lives in the standards he set, the doors he opened, and the stylists who continue the work.

Before luxury salons were commonplace in Harlem, there was Rose Meta Morgan.
In the 1940s, Morgan founded the Rose Meta House of Beauty in Harlem, creating one of the most prestigious Black-owned salons in New York City. Her space was known for elegance, professionalism, and high standards, attracting entertainers, socialites, and community leaders.
She expanded beyond the salon chair, launching her own line of beauty products and eventually opening a beauty school to train other Black women in both hair artistry and business ownership. At a time when opportunities were limited, Morgan built infrastructure, not only income.
Her work proved that Black beauty deserved luxury environments, formal education, and structured business systems.
That is leadership. That is ownership. That is industry building.

The "Proud Lady" symbol was created in 1981 by the American Health and Beauty Aids Institute (AHBAI) to identify and promote hair care products authentically owned and manufactured by African Americans. It served as a mark of quality and a push for economic unity,, appearing on over 3,500 products to help Black-owned businesses compete with mainstream corporations.

Ultra Sheen, launched in 1957 by George and Joan Johnson in Chicago, revolutionized Black hair care as one of the first effective, at-home hair straighteners for women, building a $40 million empire by 1976. As part of Johnson Products Company, it championed economic empowerment and later supported the cultural "Black is Beautiful" movement with the introduction of Afro Sheen.
