The Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company (Madam C. J. Overton Hygienic Manufacturing Company, also known as Overton Hygienic Company, was a cosmetics company established by Anthony Overton. It was one of the United States's largest producers of African-American cosmetics. Anthony Overton also ran other businesses from the building, including the Victory Life Insurance Company and Douglass National Bank, the first nationally chartered, African-American-owned bank.[2] The Overton Hygienic Building is a Chicago Landmark and part of the Black Metropolis-Bronzeville District in the Douglas community area of Chicago, Illinois. It is located at 3619-3627 South State Street.

John Merrick embodies the rich entrepreneurial spirit that helped shape what became known as Black Wall Street in Durham, North Carolina. Born into slavery in 1859, Merrick overcame immense barriers, learning to read and write in a Reconstruction school and working from a young age to support his family. His early business training came in the barber trade, where he learned the craft and then purchased his first shop in Durham in the 1880s. Through drive and strategic growth, Merrick eventually owned multiple barbershops, serving both Black and white clientele — including influential leaders — and building wealth, reputation, and vital business relationships along the way.

But barbering was only the beginning of his impact. In 1898 Merrick joined other Black business leaders in founding the North Carolina Mutual and Provident Association, which later became the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, one of the largest and most influential Black-owned insurance firms in the United States. Merrick served as the company’s first president, leading its early growth from modest beginnings to a major financial institution that provided life insurance, jobs, and economic security to African American families at a time when such services were nearly inaccessible due to racial discrimination.

His success in barbering wasn’t simply about haircuts, it was about building trust, understanding financial systems, navigating social barriers, and leveraging community networks to create institutions that outlasted him. Merrick’s vision didn’t stop with insurance: he also helped launch real estate ventures, banking services for Black customers, drug stores, and more, all reinvesting economic power back into Durham’s thriving Black business district.

Merrick’s journey from barbershop chair to financial pioneer laid the groundwork for economic empowerment, proving that expertise earned through one trade can be the foundation for generational impact.

Arnette’s Barber Shop in Carbondale, Illinois, has been more than a place for haircuts since Charles Arnette opened its doors in 1945. From its earliest days this shop served as a community anchor and safe space for dialogue, where men and boys came together not only for grooming but for conversation, mentorship, and connection.

For more than 75 years the shop has been a gathering spot where local stories are shared, relationships forged, and community concerns discussed with respect and fellowship. Its walls have witnessed everything from everyday life talk to civil rights-era meetings and neighborhood exchange — solidifying its role as a hub of culture and empowerment in Carbondale.

Today Arnette’s continues to carry that legacy under new stewards, teaching younger generations the barbershop craft, providing mentorship, and hosting conversations that matter — including community health and civic topics.

This shop is proof that Black business ownership has always meant more than commerce, it has shaped community identity, connection, and continuity.

Flashback Friday — Boston reminded me how important it is to take the trip, enjoy the moment, and live a little more.

For more than a century, Warren’s Barber Shop has symbolized Black ownership, mentorship, and community impact in Howard County. What started in 1924 when Julius Warren Sr. opened the shop in Baltimore has grown into a legacy passed through three generations of the Warren family.

Warren’s is believed to be the first Black-owned barbershop in Howard County, a rarity in its time and a model of entrepreneurial persistence. Over the decades the shop became more than a place for haircuts, evolving into a community hub where life lessons were shared, young people were mentored, and confidence was built one chair at a time.

From school supply drives and free haircut events for kids to fostering future barbers and business owners, the Warren’s team continues the tradition of giving back and lifting up its community.

This shop is a living testament to how consistent ownership, family legacy, and service create spaces that strengthen community identity and economic empowerment.

In the San Fernando Valley, legacy lives inside the walls of StylesVille Barbershop & Beauty Salon, one of the oldest Black-owned barbershops in the region.
Founded in 1957 by Freddie and Ollie Carter, StylesVille became a cornerstone for the Black community during a time when the Valley was still heavily segregated. For decades, it has operated as a family-run institution, passing knowledge, skill, and ownership from one generation to the next.
More than a place for haircuts, StylesVille has long served as a gathering space where relationships were built, business advice was shared, and community culture was preserved.
Today, its impact has been formally recognized as a historic cultural landmark, honoring its role in documenting and sustaining African American history in Pacoima and the greater Los Angeles area.

Cornelius, North Carolina, Potts Barber Shop stands as a powerful example of Black ownership, resilience, and community leadership that spans generations.
Established by Wilson Potts, the shop traces its roots back to the 1920s, with Potts learning the barbering trade as a teenager and eventually opening his own business in the early 1950s.
Located on Catawba Avenue, Potts Barber Shop is recognized as the oldest continuously operating Black-owned business in Cornelius, serving families in the community for more than 70 years.
During segregation, it was common for Black barbers to cut only white clients’ hair. In 1972, that barrier quietly ended at Potts when Wilson Potts chose to serve a Black customer, making the shop the first racially integrated barbershop in the town.
Beyond grooming, the barbershop became a trusted gathering place where conversations, relationships, and local decisions were shaped, reflecting the traditional role of Black barbershops as cultural and civic hubs.
Today, the building holds official historic landmark status, honoring both the Potts family legacy and the shop’s role in documenting the story of Black entrepreneurship and community progress in North Mecklenburg County.

Before luxury grooming was a trend, there was The Crystal Palace Barbershop, founded by Alonzo Herndon in Atlanta.
Located on Peachtree Street, the Crystal Palace was known as one of the most elegant barbershops in the South, featuring crystal chandeliers, marble and tile finishes, and more than two dozen custom barber chairs.
At a time when opportunities for Black entrepreneurs were severely limited, Herndon built multiple barbershops and employed highly skilled Black barbers who served Atlanta’s business and political elite. Encyclopedia
The Crystal Palace was more than a barbershop, it was proof that excellence, professionalism, and ownership could exist even under segregation

That same foundation of discipline and strategy later allowed Herndon to expand into finance, leading to the creation of what became the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the most successful Black-owned businesses in the nation.

*Alonzo Herndon represents one of the clearest examples of Black entrepreneurship transforming survival into legacy.
Formerly enslaved in 1858 in Georgia, Herndon began with almost no formal education and worked early jobs as a laborer and sharecropper before learning the barbering trade.
Through discipline and business strategy, he built a thriving network of upscale barbershops in Atlanta that served prominent clientele and positioned him as one of the city’s most successful businessmen.
In 1905, he expanded beyond service income and purchased a small mutual aid association that would grow into the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the most successful Black-owned businesses in the United States.
Through these ventures, Herndon became Atlanta’s first Black millionaire and used his influence to support Black economic advancement, community institutions, and national business networks.
His story is a blueprint, skill, ownership, reinvestment, and building systems that outlive the founder.

In the early 20th century, Black haircare and business education crossed a major milestone right in St. Louis when Annie Turnbo Malone built what became known as Poro College, a pioneering beauty culture institution that doubled as a training school, product factory, and community hub.

Founded in 1917, Malone’s vision was bigger than cosmetology, she saw beauty education as economic empowerment for Black women at a time when segregation and discrimination limited access to opportunity. Her campus in the historic The Ville neighborhood spanned a full city block and housed classrooms, a beauty salon, manufacturing labs, lecture halls, rooftop gardens, dormitories, even a cafeteria and chapel, reflecting her belief that success required skill and community support.

Malone wasn’t building a school, she was building generational wealth and professional pathways. The Poro curriculum taught haircare, product knowledge, sales techniques, and professional deportment, while the institution’s franchise network expanded to cities across the U.S. and around the world. By the 1920s, Poro employed nearly 200 people locally and created opportunities for tens of thousands of women globally.

Though the original building no longer stands, Poro’s influence lives on as a cornerstone of Black entrepreneurship, beauty education, and cultural pride. Annie Turnbo Malone’s legacy endures as a testament to what beauty training can mean for community uplift and economic independence.

Wilkins School of Cosmetology — Cleveland, OH
Long before beauty schools were household names Wilkins stood as a beacon of opportunity and community empowerment in Cleveland’s Cedar-Central neighborhood. Founded in the 1930s by visionary beautician and educator Edith Wilkins, the Wilkins School of Cosmetology gave Black women and men not only professional training in hair and beauty but a place to build economic independence and community pride.

Edith, who trained at Poro College and brought her skills to Cleveland in 1918, transformed a small salon into a full beauty school by 1936, offering day and evening classes and welcoming students from across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Africa
More than a school Wilkins was a social hub where students connected, collaborated, and rose together against the backdrop of segregation and limited opportunities. It even appeared in guides like the Negro Motorists’ Green Book as a place of dignity and aspiration for Black travelers and learners.

Edith’s commitment went beyond education she supported students with tuition-free spots, room and board when needed, and hosted community groups that strengthened bonds and uplifted voices. The legacy continued into the 1970s under her daughter Lucille before the school’s influence slowly faded.

Wilkins helped solidify beauty culture as a foundation of Black entrepreneurship, empowerment, and community resilience in Cleveland history.

Franklin School of Beauty Culture — Houston, TX
Over a century ago, during an era of segregation and limited opportunity for Black Americans, Madame Nobia A. Franklin forged a path of empowerment and excellence in beauty and business. Born in 1892 in Cuero, Texas, she began styling hair from her home in San Antonio and crafting her own beauty products tailored for Black women — a visionary move at a time when mainstream beauty culture ignored their needs.

In 1917, she founded the Franklin School of Beauty Culture in Houston, teaching cosmetology and business skills to students who would go on to build careers and businesses across segregated communities. The motto “The Franklin way is the right way” became synonymous with quality training and generational opportunity.

After Franklin’s passing in 1934, her daughter Abbie and son-in-law J.H. Jemison carried the torch, expanding and stabilizing the school’s impact. Established in 1935 in Greensboro, NC, by Sadie Mack and Edward D. London, Maco Beauty College (Greensboro NC) was the city's first institution specializing in hair care for Black women. Operating until 1969, the school trained over 1,000 cosmetologists and later influenced the formation of Dudley Products Inc.. The school moved to 800 E. Sycamore Street in 1941, offering comprehensive training, boarding, and product manufacturing.

Initially located at 505 E. Market St., it moved to a larger facility at 800 E. Sycamore Street in 1941.

in 1899, this building (in Boston's South End) was rented to Madame Mary L. Johnson, a wig maker, scientific scalp specialist, and hair culturist. Mary Johnson and her husband, Dr. W. Alexander Johnson, were Black and ran one of just 200 Black-owned businesses in the city of Boston by the beginning of the 20th century. At their storefront, they sold hair goods at Johnson’s Hair Store. Sold all over the United States since 1900, their famous “Johnson Hair Food” was “the most scientific pomade yet discovered for growing, beautifying and softening the hair,” they claimed. In connection with their hair product outfit, Madame Johnson operated Johnson’s School of Beauty Culture, where a variety of services including manicuring, shampooing, scalp massage, facial massage, hairdressing, and scalp treatment were offered. The school provided young Black women in Boston technical training and skills, which there were limited options at the time. Mr. Johnson also was President of the Boston Negro Business League, which helped bolster Black businesses at the turn of the century.
